Was the setting for “The Haunting” a real house, or a movie set? If it was a real location, where was it ?

It’s a real house, a manor house outside of London, England. We watched this recently on TMC and Robert Osborne mentioned the location, but I can’t remember!

…And Wikipedia comes to the rescue: Ettington Hall, outside Stratford upon Avon (birthplace of Shakespeare). Allegedly the actual location is haunted by the ghost of a young woman who hanged herself because she was not permitted to marry her lover. The cast and crew reported strange occurrences during the production.

(This of course assumes you’re discussing the 1963 Robert Wise version with Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, and Russ Tamblyn.)

And as a personal thank-you — for YEARS I’ve been troubled by the familiar appearance of Mrs. Markway. She is, of course, Lois Maxwell, better known as Moneypenny in the Sean Connery “Bond” movies. Didn’t know that until I was looking up this answer!
